Breast Implants

There are breast implant risks that every patient should be aware of before making their final decision. Many women that have undergone the removal of a breast due to breast cancer find the health risks much less then the loss of their breast. Many cancer survivors choose to have reconstructive breast implants to improve their self-esteem and quality of life.

One of the leading concerns and common complaints after breast implants are placed is a ruptured or leaking of the fluid filled sac. No medical procedure is permanent and women should not expect that the breast implant would last forever. In some cases, an implant may last for twelve years and for others, they may rupture in six months. There is no way to be sure of how long a replacement or repair will be in the future. There are many health concerns about a ruptured or leaking breast implant, but not every woman experiences the problem.

During the surgery, since you are under anesthesia there is a risk. Any time you are under an anesthetic, there is a certain amount of risk involved. Other complications such as scarring, improper implantation and problems with the incision can occur. Bleeding can also be present in some patients and is listed as a complication of the procedure.

After the surgery there is a risk of scarring, bruising and of course soreness. Women typically feel very tired for a week or so after the procedure. Of course, the breasts are very tender and swollen. There may also be some numbness or loss of feeling for a period as well. The swelling and tenderness generally disappears in several weeks. Infection can occur, but antibiotics can be prescribed if the surgeon feels that it is necessary.

Any excess liquid in the blood stream is not healthy. If a woman suspects that her breast implant has ruptured or is leaking, she should seek medical attention immediately. Not only can the leak be problematic it can also lead to infection and deflation of the breast. Most women will suspect when they have a leak or rupture and are able to seek medical attention before any further problem arises.

As with any medical procedure, there are always risks. Certainly nothing is guaranteed and the patient must weigh the positives with the potential negatives. Many women undergo breast implant surgery with no problems or complications what so ever. Others have problems, but generally are minor. Knowing the breast implant risks is your best ticket to making an educated decision.
