Breast implant statistics can be very informative and provide a world of knowledge to base your decision on. In 1998 the Food and Drug Administration reported that they had received notification of 118 deaths due to silicone gel breast implants. This could be a scary number and could deter some women from undergoing the procedure. If you keep reading, the FDA makes a statement that of these 118 deaths, autopsy did not confirm that the deaths were caused by the implants. The deaths could be a host of other ailments, but the family chose to blame the implants for the cause, which does not necessarily make them correct.

Other statistics will give you information about how many women required additional surgery and the average length of time between surgeries. There are many reports of women having repair or replacement surgery within the first three years. However, many women do not have repair or replacement surgery for seven to twelve years after the implants are placed. The numbers vary drastically and you can not assume because someone else had a second surgery in six months that you will also.

Every case is different, the body responds to implants differently. What one woman will have difficulty with another will do fine with. Statistics are a good tool to use in reviewing the literature, but should not always be taken as pure fact. Studies change, and have been known to be reported incorrectly. We have all heard the horror stories of a scientist or special interest group paying to slant the results of a study. Many studies are conducted for the sake of making a buck, so review all the information and determine for yourself before making your final decision.
