Many women mistakenly think that breast implants are there for good, but soon find themselves asking how long do breast implants last? There are a few issues to consider when answering the question of how long a woman can expect before a repair is made to the implant.

Barring any problems or complications from the initial surgery, most women assume that their breast implants will last somewhere in the neighborhood of seven to ten years. A recent study published by the Food and Drug Administration noted that one-third of the sample size reported had a leakage or implant bust before the ten-year mark. The average for a replacement or repair of all women surveyed was over eleven years. Something to keep in mind is did the one-third take care of themselves? Were they involved in some type of accident? The study did not divulge the reasoning or issues behind the removal or replacement of the one-third. So to make an educated guess, you can assume that your breast implant should be viable for over ten years.

Some complications cause the woman to have to return for replacement surgery. In some cases, the implant will reposition itself, infection or other health concerns causing them to return for surgery before the average. Some women change their mind after having implants for whatever reason. Maybe they are not happy with them, uncomfortable or whatever the reasoning return for surgery.

If you consult with a reputable surgeon and take proper care of yourself after the procedure, there should not be any problems. The replacement or repair of the breast implant is not nearly as painful or intrusive as the original surgery. So that is something to keep in mind as well. It is relatively uncommon for women to experience any notable problems with a breast implant that would warrant a second surgery before the average life of the implant.

So to answer the question of how long do breast implants last it varies from woman to woman. Given proper procedure, care and health a woman can expect to not worry with her implant for about ten years. Some last longer and others a shorter amount of time. Remember no medical treatment is one hundred percent guaranteed.
